Either Chase is “aw shucks” lying to us or his emotion setting needs a forecasting update: On today’s Mike & Ike show, Chase Utley told Michael Barkann and Ike Reese that he did not see a curtain call coming. At all.

“The whole night was different. Obviously very, very cool. Very appreciative of how the fans treated me. I didn’t anticipate a curtain call if you will. And then to have two is crazy, totally crazy. My teammates were giving me slack about it, but the whole experience was truly incredible.”

And while a bunch of fun-ruiners decided that cheering for Utley was wrong and against the Phillies, Utley doesn’t think that’s the case:

“The last thing I want to do is be disrespectful to the Phillies team. That’s the last thing I want to do. So those are situations that you never really put yourself in and I wanted to do what I thought the fans wanted, but at the same time I didn’t want to disrespect the Phillies team. I hope they aren’t disrespected. I don’t think they are, but I just hope they aren’t.”

Chase is fine with ovation. Chase didn’t see it coming. Chase doesn’t think it was disrespectful to the Phillies. And Chase…feel…nervous? What is nervous? Does not compute.

“That first at-bat, no joke, it was probably the most nervous I’ve ever been in the batters box in my life. I was appreciative of the support, but I was happy when it was over for sure. I wanted to do so well for the fans, it kind of takes you out of your comfort zone if you will. But that’s OK, it was well worth it.”

You can cheer for the Phillies and cheer for Chase. You can love both of them. And for at least one last night, we made Chase feel like he was home.
