The plane carrying Phillies beat writers Jim Salisbury, Matt Gelb, Meghan Montemurro, and others back from Atlanta was given a new course to avoid storms around Washington. The flight was supposed to go up around the Chicago area and add a little over an hour to the trip. But then the plane started smelling like shit because the toilets were overflowing. Here’s how Rob Tornoe explained it:

“Unfortunately, the crew apparently forgot to service the lavatories while they were in Atlanta, and somewhere near Cincinnati the toilets became clogged and overflowed…

“Is it a common thing? No,” an American Airlines spokesperson said of the flight’s backed-up toilets. “It does occur from time to time, and for sanitary reason and the sake the folks on board, we try to expedite the trip as quickly as we can.'”

Fr. Ed Casey – who coached Kyle in hockey way back when – pointed out that you can almost see the exact moment they realized the poo problem. Indeed:

poo plane

Always Ohio. Always.

As someone who doesn’t like flying and has a long flight coming up – and has had dreams almost nightly about plane crashes for the last month – I’ll take poo plane 99 times out of 100. I think. Once was probably enough for the beats though.
