The Sixers Want To Pay J.J. Redick ALL OF THE MONEY Next Year

On a wild free agency night, the Sixers were mostly quiet except for a handful of reports that they want to pay J.J. Redick $20 million+ for one season. But Redick would prefer a longer term contract. Here’s how Woj, now with ESPN, described it:

With Chris Paul being trading by the Clippers, Redick reportedly won’t re-sign with them. He reportedly also has interest from the Nets and Timberwolves.

This is smart by Colangelo. As it stands, the Sixers will have basically limitless cap space this year and next. So it would hurt them none to overpay a veteran on a short-term deal. We’re no longer counting losses or jockeying for lottery position, so bringing in a veteran, like Redick, who is the perfect fit, to improve the team and maybe help get them to a playoff series or two would be a good thing and would not disrupt the process.

But why only one year and not two? It seems to me Colangelo wants to keep all of his options open next offseason, after we (and the league) get a chance to see what this core looks like, to potentially make a very big splash. Otherwise they could very easily offer Redick a two-year deal no problem.
