I know y’all don’t care about my fantasy team, but I feel like West ended up on it every year. He was that guy who had a big week, so I’d claim him off waivers and then watch him do nothing once I added him to the starting lineup. Then I’d drop him, he’d have another big game, and I’d put him back in the starting lineup, where he would once again scrape 1 or 2 points.
His best year came in 2016, when he started 13 games and ran for 774 yards and five touchdowns:
West only had 39 carries last season, relegated to third-string duties behind Alex Collins and Javorius Allen. He’s short, 5’10”, but weighs 225 pounds, so he’s a capable between-the-tackles type of runner with downhill ability but no true breakaway speed. At best, he’d be a third or fourth option behind Jay Ajayi, Corey Clement, and Darren Sproles, who are roster locks. Wendell Smallwood, Donnel Pumphrey, and undrafted free agent Josh Adams are also in the mix.
As for Upshaw, he came out of Alabama as a DE/OLB hybrid and didn’t exactly light the world on fire in Baltimore. He played the last two seasons for the Falcons and saw a bunch of snaps at defensive tackle, a position the Eagles need to take a look at after the Tim Jernigan surgery news. At best, Upshaw would be a nice addition as an experienced and affordable guy who can jump right into the rotation behind Fletcher Cox and Haloti Ngata.
Whether or not either player sticks, I don’t know, but the Eagles could do much worse. Joe Douglas, who spent many years in the Ravens organization, is familiar with both of these guys.
