Stephen A had another gaffe on First Take this week, identifying Redskins punter Tress Way as one of the multiple people who played quarterback for Washington this season.
Here’s video proof:
This man @stephenasmith at it again saying Tress Way started a game at QB for the Skins 😂 C’monnnn man. If you’d dig a little deeper than the boxscore, you’d see Tress Way is a damn Punter pic.twitter.com/6YM5GVxNRa

You look at the Redskins last year, they had five different quarterbacks. Alex Smith, Josh Johnson, Colt McCoy, they even got Mr. butt fumble himself, Mark Sanchez, okay? Some guy guy named Tress Way actually started one game.
Tress Way threw a pass last year, so maybe Stephen A got crossed up when looking at a stat sheet or Pro Football Reference or something like that.
Simple mistake, right? Sure, but I’m kind of worried about the guy. He’s been slipping up frequently.
Back in December, he previewed an NFL game by talking about two guys who hadn’t even played this year, Hunter Henry and Derrick Johnson.
Wrote BWanks at the time:
- Smith begins by citing the role of Spencer Ware (who is doubtful tonight)
- Says the San Diego Chargers (the city in which the team no longer plays)
- Praises the effectiveness of tight end Hunter Henry and “the way he’s played this year” (he hasn’t played since last season)
- Finishes by discussing Henry’s matchup with linebacker Derrick Johnson (who was released by the Raiders in October and is currently not in the NFL)
Smith described it as a “brain-lock moment.”
In February, Stephen A also got panned for describing Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins as “more of a runner than a passer,” when Haskins only had 79 rushing attempts for 108 yards last year, compared to 533 pass attempts, which resulted in 4,800 yards and 50 touchdowns.
Also last month, Stephen A unleashed a flamethrower of a take when he described Robert Kraft and workers at the Orchids of Asia day spa as “consenting adults.” They were actually believed to be sex slaves at the time.
He also mentioned that Le’Veon Bell would be a good choice for the Panthers, completely forgetting that they already had Christian McCaffrey on the roster.
So listen, mistakes happen, but I feel like Stephen A is tripping up waaaaaay too frequently these days. Dude is spread way too thin. He’s doing basketball, he’s talking NFL, he jumped in on ESPN’s UFC coverage and still travels all over the place doing live shows and live hits and appearing at press conferences. He was even at the Sixers game a few weeks back asking Brett Brown questions.
He doesn’t need to be doing that. Someone at ESPN just needs to dial this back, cut down on his workload, and let the guy chill out for a minute, maybe even send him on a South Pacific vacation for a week or so. Hit the reset button.
We need to get Stephen A back to his what he’s good at, which is trolling Dallas Cowboy fans in Dallas:
Lmao Stephen A off the top rope here: pic.twitter.com/iKtlAkl1Ed
