Gotta be honest – I had no idea what I was looking at when this video clip crossed the Twitter feed. Then I stumbled upon an explanation.

So here’s what happened:

Sixers power forward Mike Scott showed up in South Philly today to race the security guard who actually chased down the guy who ran onto the field at Citizens Bank Park during a rain delay a few weeks back.

According to Sean of Corner Pub Sports, Justin DiVirgilio is that security guard. Mike Scott apparently saw the video of the guy running onto the field and using the tarp as a slip and slide, then proclaimed that he could outrun DiVirgilio. Word got back to Justin, who challenged Scott to a footrace, which Scott today won, after the jump:

Justin and Mike made a wager, and since Mike won, Justin has to buy him a cheesesteak from a place of his choice.

But that’s not the point here. The point is that Scott showed up when he didn’t have to, raced a fan, took photos with people, did all of that stuff. He’s become a fan-favorite despite spending a total of maybe five months in Philadelphia, which is kind of cool. People have really attached themselves to his personality. It’s a great fit and and interesting cult figure type of story. The “Mike Scott Hive” just exploded out of nowhere.

You won’t find a lot of players who do stuff like this:

Or this:

Shout out to Mike Scott.
