How bout them Cowboys?

They got rolled at home on Thanksgiving, falling to 6-6 with the entire country watching. They’ve now lost six of nine games since starting 3-0 and have not beaten a team with a winning record.

Surely that should do it for Jason Garrett, right? Not yet, according to owner Jerry Jones:

“This is not the time for me [to make a coaching change],” Jones said outside the locker room with tears in his eyes. “I’m looking ahead at another ballgame. I’m looking ahead at winning four or five straight and helping write a story they will talk about, how it looks like you’re down and out. And I mean that. That’s the way that I’m operating. Every decision that I make over the next month will be with an eye in mind to get us in the Super Bowl now.”

Sounds like a difficult time down there in Big D, which you hate to see. There was some shouting taking place in the Dallas locker room after the game, which we can attribute to a guy who has been on the team for five seconds:

Apparently Jerry spoke for something like 20 minutes outside the locker room with reporters, saying this as well:

“I’m going to do the same thing I’ve always done when I get a setback or get my butt kicked,” Jones said. “I’m going to get up in the morning and I’m going to look for ways [to help], and I’m not going to panic. I’m going to look for ways to improve the situation. … One of them is not a coaching change.

“I’m just not going to make a coaching change.”

That’s good news for the rest of the NFL, since Jason Garrett has taken a talented squad and underachieved with it for a few years now.

So the NFC East is pretty clearly the worst division in football, which means the Eagles have a good chance to win this thing. They “control their own destiny,” as the cliche goes.

Here’s the Birds’ remaining schedule:

  • at Dolphins
  • vs Giants
  • at Redskins
  • vs Cowboys
  • at Giants

And the Cowboys’ schedule:

  • at Bears
  • vs Rams
  • at Eagles
  • vs Redskins

It comes down to Eagles/Cowboys on December 22nd, assuming both teams take care of business elsewhere. If this goes to the third tiebreaker scenario, which is common games, the Birds are in better shape because they beat the Jets and Bills and while Dallas lost to both teams.

The Eagles have a reasonable path to the playoffs in front of them if they can get back on track, starting this weekend against a poopy Miami team. Go out, beat the brakes off that squad, get yourself back to 6-6, and prepare for four winnable games to close out the season.

Happy Black Friday, don’t trample anybody at the Coventry Mall.
