Nick Foles: Benched for Gardner Minshew

Douglas DeFelice-USA TODAY Sports

Not a great Sunday for Super Bowl champion Nick Foles, who was benched for Gardner Minshew at halftime of the Jag-wires’ 28-11 home loss to Tampa Bay.

Foles finished 7-14 for 93 yards and an interception with a pair of lost fumbles, which resulted in fans openly chanting for the backup quarterback instead:

Great stat from ESPN Jaguars reporter Michael DiRocco:

Nick Foles has played 173 snaps in four games this season and if the change to Gardner Minshew is permanent for the final month of the season Foles will have earned $177,746 per snap in 2019.

Not a bad monetary haul, but I feel bad for Nick, honestly. He got a big-money contract and a chance to be the starting quarterback, began his Duval tenure 5-8 for 75 yards and a touchdown in the season opener, and then broke his clavicle and missed nine weeks of action. Minshew comes in with his goofy mustache, plays well, and then Foles looks rough after taking back the starting job. Now he’s lost it again as the Jags slump their way to a 4-8 record.

The ‘Folesian society’ should pipe down a bit after this benching. That’s not a knock against Nick or Eagle fans who believe he’s better than Carson Wentz, but seriously, some of that was getting really annoying. It was annoying to hear “Nick Foles would have blah blah” every time time Wentz threw a bad pass. Foles is a legend here and let’s just leave it at that. They were never going to keep him and trade Wentz anyway, so it’s not worth talking about, and it’s certainly not worth dumbing down his legacy in this town via pointless internet arguments.

Edit: he’s benched Sunday –

Amazing that this mutt easily replaced Carson Wentz and led a team to a Super Bowl victory and then the next season took over a floundering team and got to the divisional round with a worst roster than the 2019 5-7 team Wentz is leading.

Foles’ failures are a gigantic indictment of Wentz and also, kind of show this team’s offense was made to be idiot proof.

They just have the wrong idiot running it now.

    • Carson will never win a playoff game as an Attachment Eagles qb he is very overrated December 2, 2019 at 12:23 pm

      My sentiments to.

    • Let me know in those games how many times the run to pass ratio December 2, 2019 at 12:30 pm

      was roughly 75/25

      Ill wait….

No offense is idiot proof when one dimensional…

Especially 75/25 in games that were never at any point more then one possession games…
      thats just foolish….

      Again ill wait…

Your arguments like this entire eagles team right now, are full of holes?

Lets continue to make the case for Nick Foles though, 10 touched by God Quarters. 10….If you would like to enlighten me on when this offense came to life last year when Savior came in please let me know, was it the 18 points in the Bear Game or the 14 points in the Saint game and 0 points after drive 2 that should move my needle.

      Again ill wait.

What has Wentz done in the playoffs?

        I’ll wait.

Wentz calls his own number in RPO situations all the time because he wants to throw the ball. He craves those stats.

When’s the last time Wentz came to the line, read the defense and audibled out of one of those 75% of plays that were called passes?

        I’ll wait

        • Kil Kill Kill December 2, 2019 at 2:47 pm

We are lucky they don’t throw the ball all the Time!
If groh and Pederson had thier way that raitio be more like 85/15

      Thanks for the insight.

this is kind of funny tho. Foles always lights it up in an Eagles uniform, but when he’s played elsewhere he’s been stuck with two awful franchises. Once he was with Jeff Fisher which needs no further explanation, but this short tenure with the Jags has been tricky. That team started out with some confidence to begin the season, and Minshew can make some things happen when the play breaks down but overall they are a mediocre football team at best who gave up after the Ramsey trade. The offense was already breaking down before Foles came back, but now it looks like it’s all because of him since they have been horrid the past two weeks. The bucs had a huge lead when Minshew came in and played prevent which allowed their offense to score finally only for Minshew to struggle to find the end zone again once the Bucs locked back in. At least Nick got paid.

  • Maybe we can trade Wentz to the Jags and get Nick back December 2, 2019 at 12:26 pm

If Howie can pull this off he would executive of the year in 2020.

I don’t want either of them

  • Innes' Failed Diet December 2, 2019 at 12:37 pm

The comparison was always who played better while wearing an Eagles uniform, and the answer was Foles. In this system with these players Foles accomplished what Wentz couldn’t.

Wentz had a losing record in 2017 vs. teams with winning records (as he has for his career). Who says they beat Atlanta with Wentz at QB?

What’s Wentz’s record since that last game against LA (which the team was losing when Foles came in by the way)?

        It’s 10 -13. Elite quarterbacking there.

        • Wrong Again December 2, 2019 at 3:01 pm

          Lost to KC 0-1
          Beat Panthers 1-1
          Beat Redskins 2-1
          Beat Cowboys 3-1
          Loss Seahawks 3-2

Beat Rams regardless how you look it, so at worst hes 500 based on your logic, he also beat a Charger team that while a dumpster fire in the beginning rebounded to have a pretty good year…

And when they played AZ that year they were 500.

      • Don't Forget 2018 When Foles was leading this team to a losing record until Wentz stepped in and took them to the playoffs December 2, 2019 at 2:11 pm

Or 2019 when Wentz really reached superstar levels and put this team on his back on the way to another playoff run.

Another weekend of picks, another slate of losers. Nobody watches our vids either so we gave up on those too.

The new CB is killing it!

  • Mike Missanelli and bubble lips Tyrone are going to commit suicide when this happens December 2, 2019 at 1:00 pm

Good, now sign Foles in the offseason and lets completely break Carson Zit Neck Wentz psyche. This is going to be great.

  • hey kev-o December 2, 2019 at 1:30 pm

What was the atmosphere like at the game yesterday? Lots of Eagles fans? What was the mood like in the locker room afterward?

….as the guy who covers the team, you were there…right?

Nick Foles: 1 win 0 losses in Super Bowl, and also Super Bowl MVP.

Donovan McPuke: 0 wins 1 loss in Super Bowl and 3 interceptions.

  • So Taguchi - Folesian Society Dues Paying Member December 2, 2019 at 2:09 pm

If we would have traded Wentz instead of letting Foles walk, we could have avoided all of this….and beaten the Pats again….and be leading the NFC East…

  • johnny nas December 2, 2019 at 3:01 pm

Wentz to Oakland for a 1st and 3rd. Send the 3rd (or later round) to Jax for foles. Use the 1st for a Oline or Secondary stud

Next year, we have foles and we can draft a qb of the future in the next few drafts.
