A while back, Yardley Borough police officer Adam Clark wagered $4133 on Jeopardy! as a tip of the cap to his favorite NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles, who won Super Bowl LII 41-33 over the New England Patriots. He became an instant legend and even made a special appearance on Crossing Broadcast. It was a cool story seen by the millions of regular Jeopardy! viewers, but that number pales in comparison to what happened on Thursday night:

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re aware of what’s been going down in primetime this week on ABC with Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time. The special run of the legendary show features the three greatest players ever, who have also won the most money in the show’s history:

  • Ken Jennings, most consecutive wins (74)
  • Brad Rutter, most money won by a contestant ($4,688,436)
  • James Holzhauer, top 16 single-game winnings (#1: $131,127)

Brad Rutter, who hails from Lancaster County, has been fighting an uphill battle in the tournament, something that has rarely happened against human competitors (damn you, IBM Watson). Rutter and his fellow contestants had a tough time with the Final Jeopardy clue, “These 2 foreign-born directors have each won 2 best director Oscars but none of their films has won Best Picture.”

Rather than throw a random guess out, Rutter wrote, “Ken [Jennings] es el hombre // Eagles Super Bowl LII Champs”. This, along with a Holzhauer joke about Pat Sajak Alex Trebek being the GHOST (Greatest Host of Syndicated Television), led to Trebek saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to welcome you to the Jeopardy comedy hour.”

Rutter exclaimed, “GO BIRDS!” Go birds indeed.
