The NBA has a Board of Governors meeting set for tomorrow, and Shams Charania says Adam Silver will propose a 22-team return to play, which means the stinky New York Knicks would be done for the year.

Shams at The Athletic:

The NBA’s 22-team format at Orlando’s Disney World would bring the 16 teams currently in a playoff spot, six additional teams, and include a play-in tournament for the eighth seed, sources said. The play-in tournament would work as follows, according to sources: If the ninth seed is more than four games behind the eighth seed, the eighth seed earns the playoff spot; if the ninth seed is four or fewer games behind, then the eighth and ninth seed will enter a play-in tournament that is double-elimination for the eighth seed and single-elimination for ninth. ESPN first reported the league was working on 22-team models.

And here’s Woj with another tidbit:

Washington is 5.5 games behind Orlando for the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference, with Charlotte seven games out and Chicago eight games out.

In the Western Conference, you’ve got Portland, New Orleans, and Sacramento all 3.5 games behind Memphis, in a much tighter race.

Sixteen playoff teams plus those six just outside the bubble would get us to 22.

The good thing about this format is that it allows the Sixers to jockey for seeding, but, honest to God, I think they’re better served staying where they are, playing the Celtics in the first round, and avoiding Miami in a 4/5 matchup where home games and road games don’t exist anyway.

EDIT –

Some clarity from Woj:

Okay, so Charlotte and Chicago are out because they’re more than four games back. Instead a bunch of those fringe teams in the west will participate.

I’ll update if I see anything else.
