Big story out of the NASCAR world, probably the biggest sports story in the country right now.

Sunday at Talladega, somebody placed a noose inside the garage of Bubba Wallace, who is the only black driver on the circuit.

Here’s the official statement from NASCAR:

Wallace released a statement of his own, saying he was “saddened” by the “despicable” act.

ESPN’s Marty Smith reported that Wallace did not actually see the noose, which was discovered by a member of his team, who then informed NASCAR. Right now there’s no video and no still photos of the item or of the garage, at least nothing that’s gone public yet.

Here’s a relevant blurb from CNN:

NASCAR told CNN the garage area where the noose was found is restricted to essential personnel, which includes race teams, NASCAR officials, security and health and safety personnel.

Seems like it would be a tough area for some random dude to access.

That’s resulted in some conspiracy theories, with people suggesting a false flag or inside job or whatever you wanna call it. For context here, NASCAR recently decided to ban the Confederate Flag at all events, though the stars and bars were seen outside of the Alabama race track this weekend and a plane flew overhead with a “Defund NASCAR” banner and Confederate Flag attached.

There will be more to this story.
