Former Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has joined the team’s television coverage this season, NBC Sports Philadelphia announced earlier this afternoon. His work will be split between game broadcasts and NBCSN’s pre and postgame coverage.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Ruben to our outstanding Phillies broadcast team,” said NBC Sports Philadelphia VP of Live Events, Shawn Oleksiak. “His insight and knowledge of the game, the league and the Phillies organization will add a dimension to an already stellar broadcast team.”

Despite eventually falling out of favor with Phillies fans as the team failed to reach the postseason during his final four years as GM, Amaro, who was fired by the club at the end of the 2015 season, should make for a good addition to the broadcast.

He has been seen hanging around on a few different occasions in the press box during Phillies summer camp. Personally, he strikes me as an affable guy, one who also happens to have unique perspective as a former player, general manager, and coach. There’s not too many guys out there with such a resume.

“I am incredibly excited to join this great broadcast group and equally excited to tell the stories of my hometown team,” said Amaro. “I grew up a fan of the Phillies and the opportunity to return to Philly and broadcast games for a team that my father and I both player for is a dream come true.”

Amaro’s tenure began tonight on NBCSP’s Phils-Yankees broadcast. Sounds good so far.
