Blue Jays Put the Kibosh on "Homeless" T-Shirts
Welcome to the latest installment of “what’s offending us today?“.
I’m your host, Kevin Kinkead.
Today we’re taking a trip to Canada, to check on the Blue Jays, who… actually wait, they haven’t played any games in Toronto this season, because they’re not allowed. Their temporary home is in Buffalo and they’ve played “home” game in other teams’ stadiums.
As such, the players have been wearing these shirts, with the words “Homeless Jays”and showing the team mascot with a baseball bat bindle and tattered clothing, depicted as a vagrant:
Seems like the players are just poking fun at themselves here. A little bit of self-deprecating humor. They are technically homeless, since they can’t play in their own city, but apparently the shirts were deemed insensitive and banned by the team, which said this via statement, in part:
“The Blue Jays take accountability for ensuring negative stereotypes are not perpetuated and for supporting marginalized groups in our community. The club has addressed the issue of the T-shirts with our players and they will not be worn again.”
Okay that’s fine, but there’s obviously no pernicious intent. This isn’t a commentary on mid-pandemic evictions or a cheap shot at the encampment on the Ben Franklin Parkway. Maybe it’s a little insensitive, but we all need to just take it down a notch and save our outrage for things that really do deserve the attention.
