The sixth-seed New York Islanders were one of just two teams in the entire Stanley Cup playoffs to pull off a first-round upset, dispatching of the third-seed Washington Capitals in just five games. More impressively, they outscored the Caps 18-7 over the course of those five games.

The Philadelphia Flyers rode a three-game Round Robin winning-streak to the top of the Eastern Conference, jumping up from fourth-place, where they ended the regular season. The Flyers appeared dominant at times, with 22-year-old netminder Carter Hart registering back-to-back shutouts in Games 3 & 4, but the team did experience their own share of adversity.
