Each year, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences hands out regional Emmy awards via their various geo-specific chapters. We here in the Philadelphia region belong to a grouping known as “Mid-Atlantic,” so television folks at the local stations compete with Pittsburgh and Allentown and other nearby cities for the distinction of being recognized for outstanding broadcasting work. Larry Mendte has something like 75 regional Emmys, and I’m lucky enough to have one, though the honest truth is that Walt Hunter did the heavy lifting back in the day.

Anyway, the 2020 nominations are out, and Krystle Rich and Tyrone Johnson got a nod for the mischief night episode of Sixers Outsiders. They’ll go up against a Pittsburgh Penguins pregame show:

50. SPORTS PROGRAM- LIVE

“Penguins Pregame Show”- AT&T SportsNet
Douglas Johnson, Executive Producer
Roger Lenhart, Coordinating Producer
Fred Rihn, Producer
Craig Hall, Associate Producer
Ryan Wood, Editor
Mikie Welsh, Editor
Mark Thompkins, Editor
Dan Potash, Talent

“Sixers Outsiders: Mischief Night Live”- NBC Sports Philadelphia
Krystle Rich, Host
Tyrone Johnson, Host

The process basically begins with you deciding if you’d like to submit an entry for one of nearly a hundred categories. You pay a fee, and then your footage is viewed by peers in other markets, who then grade your entry and decide whether it’s worthy of nomination. Then, in September, there’s a big party where you get all dressed up, they announce the winners, and you get your statue.

Anyway, congrats to Krystle and Tyrone for the nomination, and hopefully they beat a stinky Penguins show to win the award, OUTRIGHT! <Mikey Miss voice>

And also congratulations to the team that put together the Bryce Harper signing documentary, as they’ve been nominated for an Emmy in a different category:

49. SPORTS- ONE-TIME SPECIAL

“Signing Harper”- NBC Sports Philadelphia

Ryan Woldoff, Editor/Associate Producer
Michael Mulhern, Executive Producer
Sean Kane, Producer
Jeremiah Hines, Photographer
James Salisbury, Reporter
Michael Barkann, Reporter
Jeff Dougherty, Creative Services Editor
Ashley Hall, Creative Services Producer

They’re actually up against the Sixers in this category, who submitted a Ben Simmons piece.

Here’s the full list of nominations if you’re bored out of your mind.
