Somebody at Major League Baseball had the great idea of naming Gold Glove winners on election night.

Brilliant!

Let’s award these players for their hard work and elite achievements at the exact time that tens of millions of Americans are glued to their televisions and paying attention to the most bitterly contested political race of our lifetime.

It’s crazy, isn’t it? It’s the most Major League Baseball thing of all time. It’s so on brand for a tone deaf league that continues to fall short in the PR department and can’t even make the simplest of decisions to help itself.

This tweet right here sums it up:

Not sure whether to laugh or cry. It’s so bad that you go from being annoyed to finding inevitable comedy in the latest MLB mishap. Maybe they thought they would be providing a sports alternative to people who were sick of the politics? Dunno. It’s not like there was an actual game being played. You gotta find ways to help yourself. We can’t help you if you can’t help yourself.

Anyway, Mookie Betts won a 5th straight Gold Glove. Anthony Rizzo, Kolten Wong, Tucker Barnhart, Roberto Perez, and Alex Gordon were repeat winners. This year the awards were based on defensive metrics, and because of the weird COVID-affected schedule, managers didn’t vote.

The Phillies, sadly, did not have any Gold Glove winners.
