Let’s check in the Phillies.

They just brought in a new pitching coach but need to replace General Manager Matt Klentak, who is shifting into a different role or whatever for this season. They couldn’t get J.T. Realmuto signed to a long-term deal and he’s now a free agent.

Tuesday, we’ve now got a quality free agent pitcher going to a division rival:

Add Morton to a rotation that already includes Max Fried, Mike Soroka, and Ian Anderson.

It’s less about the Phillies not making an attempt to sign a guy they once traded for, and it’s more about what’s happening elsewhere in the division. The Mets look like a rejuvenated contender under new owner Steve Cohen. The Braves are really damn good. The Marlins and Nationals don’t exactly stink. The Phils need to figure out what they’re doing and do it, or else another third place finish looks likely.
