Cris Collinsworth story on a Thursday morning.

The NBC color commentator found himself in some HOT WATER because people were offended by a comment he made during Wednesday’s Steelers/Ravens game, which took place in the ‘Burgh.

Here is the segment in question:

Collinsworth:

“Particularly the ladies that I met, they had really specific questions about the game. I’m like, ‘wow,’ you’re just blown away about how strong the fans are here in this town.”

Okay, so that could be considered patronizing towards women because one could infer an insinuation that they don’t really know anything about football. Collinsworth was “blown away” by their football knowledge, because the old stereotype is that football is a man’s game and women are less interested and/or less versed in the sport.

Here’s the apology, shared on his Twitter page:

“Today on our broadcast I made reference to a couple of women that I met in Pittsburgh who so impressed me with their football knowledge that I wanted to tell their story on the air. I know the way I phrased it insulted many. I’m so sorry. What I intended as a compliment to the fans of Pittsburgh, became an insult. I’m sick about insulting any fan, but especially female fans and journalists. I know first hand how much harder they have to work than any of us in this industry. I was wrong and I deeply apologize.”

That’s fine. Good apology.

He should try to word this better next time to sound complimentary and not patronizing instead. Collinsworth screwed up, owned it, and apologized pretty much right away, so he’ll be alright. It’s not like he called Pittsburgh “one of the (expletive) capitals of the world.”

Now THAT would be something worth cancellation.
