High school football is taken very seriously in Texas.

Case in point, here’s a viral video going around the internet as we speak, showing a defensive tackle charging and knocking to the ground a referee who ejected him from the game:

This took place near McAllen, which is along the Mexico border close to Brownsville. A reporter on the scene named Andrew McCulloch says the player was escorted from the stadium by police.

McCulloch, writing for The Monitor:

Fred Garcia, the official involved, was able to get up under his own power and was helped off the field after a cart was driven onto the turf so medical personnel could assess the situation.

He was taken to an ambulance outside of the stadium gates, where he was medically evaluated for a potential shoulder injury and concussion-like symptoms. Garcia also did not return to the game and officials continued shorthanded for the remainder of the contest.

Garcia, a McAllen resident, is 58 years old and has been with the Texas Association of Sports Officials for 27 years.

See, now this is why people don’t sign up to ref, or they quit within a few months. The level of abuse you take is ridiculous. You’re always taking shit from parents who don’t know the rules and coaches who think they’re on the sidelines at a NFL game. On the rare occasion, an ejected defensive tackle will come onto the field and barrel into you.

It’s a thankless job.
