Flyers vs. Capitals Betting Pick (March 13, 2021)

The Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals have met three times this season, with the first meeting going Philadelphia’s way in a 7-4 victory in Washington, DC. The team from the nation’s capital flipped the script in the ensuing two matchups by a total of 8-4.

Last Sunday’s game didn’t exactly go to plan as 22-year-old netminder Carter Hart allowed three goals on 27 shots faced. He then gave up three goals on just eight shots and was pulled prior to the second period in Tuesday night’s game against Buffalo. Backup goalie Brian Elliott was strong in relief, stopping both shots in the shootout as the Flyers won 5-4. Elliott then got the start on Thursday against Washington, allowing four goals on 21 shots. Despite that shaky performance, Elliott will once again get the start in net for the Orange & Black in tonight’s game.

Washington has won three consecutive games, including a 5-4 OT win against the New Jersey Devils sandwiched between the wins over the Flyers. In Thursday night’s game, Nic Dowd found the back of the net twice, while Alexander Ovechkin kept up his goalscoring ways against the team from the City of Brotherly Love. The Caps’ three-game winning streak has vaulted Washington to a 16-6-4 record, good for the second seed in the East Division.

Bets We Like With a Flyers Win

Money Puck gives the Flyers a 52.4% chance of winning this game. Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s implied win probability based on the moneyline is nearly identical at 53%.

Flyers Win and Over 5.5 Goals (+190, DraftKings Sportsbook)

As for the over 5.5 goals, recent trends indicate a high likelihood of the total going over once again. The Flyers have seen the total goals hit seven or more goals in five of their last six games. The teams have combined to go over 5.5 total goals in two of the teams’ three meetings this season, including 11 goals in their first matchup and eight in Thursday night’s contest.

Brian Elliott has been solid for the Flyers this season, often being called upon to right the ship, however he’s not infallible. He’s allowed at least three goals in three of his last four games, including all three of the games he was given the nod to start in net. One of those games, of course, came at home against the Capitals on Thursday night.

The Flyers have allowed four goals per game over their last six games, including three games at home. If Philadelphia wins this game, something they’ll feel plenty of pressure to do, it’ll likely come in a game that will cross the 5.5 total goal threshold.

Bets We Like With a Capitals Win

Alex Ovechkin to Score a Goal and Capitals to Win (+350, FOX Bet)

Alex Ovechkin is one of the most prolific goal scorers in NHL history, and his success against the Orange & Black tells a similar story. In his career, Ovechkin has racked up 65 points (38 G, 27A) in 60 career games against Philadelphia.

In the first matchup between the teams this season, Ovechkin put on a show in the nation’s capital as he scored two goals and recorded two assists. In the second meeting, Ovechkin scored a goal in a 3-1 Capitals victory. He found the back of the net once again on Thursday night, scoring once again in a 5-3 victory.

If you’re planning on taking the Caps on the moneyline, this same game parlay is worth a look.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Sean Couturier to Record Over 0.5 Point (-143, DraftKings)

Sean Couturier has 17 points to his credit in 13 full games this season. The reigning Selke Trophy winner has recorded at least one point in eleven of his last twelve games, including six goals and ten assists.

He’s found the back of the net twice in three games against the Caps this season, while dishing out three assists. This follows a similar trend to last season when the Flyers’ best two-way forward averaged a point per game in four games against Washington in 2019-20.

The -143 odds being offered by DraftKings Sportsbook are identical to what was offered ahead of Thursday’s game. There will come a time to get off this trend’s proverbial train, but now is not that time.

Alex Ovechkin to Score 1+ Goal (+135, DraftKings Sportsbook)

For bettors who agreed with the logic of Ovechkin scoring a goal against the Flyers as outlined above, but are hesitant to parlay the outcome with the Caps’ moneyline, this bet is worth taking a flier on. It’s not a huge profit multiplier, but if you’re looking for a player prop independent of outcome, this could be the one for you.

Flyers vs. Capitals Prediction

Pick: Philadelphia is in a mental must-win against a division rival that’s handed them two defeats at home this week alone. This one is setting up to be another high-scoring affair. Take the Flyers to Win and Over 5.5 Goals. Also, consider getting in on Sean Couturier’s hot streak.
