The Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils met on Sunday night in the first of four matchups this week, a game which saw the Flyers skate away with a 4-3 shootout win at home. Now the teams head to the Prudential Center for two games before they return to Wells Fargo Center on Saturday. The Flyers’ victory has them five points behind the New York Rangers for fifth in the East Division, but with only eight games remaining and no realistic shot of leapfrogging the Rangers and Boston Bruins for a playoff spot, every win Philadelphia earns serves the purpose of negatively affecting their draft position.
The Devils, meanwhile, are in legitimate striking distance of the worst record in the NHL as their 35 points are tied for the second-fewest in the league with the Anaheim Ducks, just two points ahead of the Buffalo Sabres. The issue at hand for the Devils, Ducks, and Sabres is the looming expansion Seattle Kraken, who will earn an automatic lottery bid for the top pick.
All of this is to say that it behooves neither the Flyers nor Devils to win this contest, but someone has to earn two points.

Bets We Like With a Flyers Win
Money Puck gives the Flyers just a a 47.2% chance of winning this game. Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s implied win probability based on the moneyline is higher at 55%.
Flyers to Win and Under 6.5 Goals (+205, DraftKings Sportsbook)
The Philadelphia Flyers have been installed as the favorite in this game by various sportsbooks, though it’s worth noting that Money Puck’s projection model stands in opposition to that notion. After falling behind with just under five minutes gone in the first period on Sunday, reigning Selke Trophy winner Sean Couturier leveled the game in the first period. However, the Devils struck for two unanswered goals and it appeared they were going to pull off an improbable win. That was until Flyers captain Claude Giroux scored two goals in 22 seconds with just over a minute remaining in regulation, forcing overtime and eventually a shootout. Kevin Hayes netted the shootout winner, while Brian Elliott sealed the deal with a huge save to lock in the win.
Sunday’s 4-3 shootout victory marked Philadelphia’s third triumph in four games against the Devils and their first since January 28. As for taking under 6.5 goals, it’s worth noting that prior to Sunday’s game, the Flyers had seen the under 6.5 goals marked hit in three consecutive games. It took two late Claude Giroux goals to force the overtime and eventual shootout that led to the over hitting in that contest. As such, we expect the Flyers to bear down on the road and hold New Jersey in check in a game that has massive lottery implications for a dreadful Devils squad.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome
Over 1.5 Goals in the Third Period (-220, DraftKings Sportsbook)
When it comes to bets worth considering that are independent of the game’s outcome, there might not be one with a better historical trend on its side than this one. The Flyers and Devils have combined to score at least two goals in the third period in each of their previous four meetings this season. In fact, that trend stretches back even further, as Philadelphia and New Jersey have seen the “Over 1.5 Third Period Goals” market hit in each of the last 11 meetings between these division rivals.
As for recent trends, the Flyers have seen at least two goals scored in four of their last five games, including each of their last three games. The Devils have seen the “Over 1.5 Third Period Goals” market hit in each of their last two games, as well as five of their last six games overall.

Claude Giroux to Record Over 2.5 Shots (+105, BetMGM)
Lost in the woefully underwhelming Flyers season has been the play of captain Claude Giroux, who has racked up 35 points (13G, 22A) in 46 games this season. While his team has been consistently inconsistent, Giroux has stood out as one player whose effort has not wavered throughout a roller coaster season. With his team’s playoff chances all but snuffed out, Giroux has gotten more aggressive at putting pucks on net while attempting to keep his team actively engaged in otherwise meaningless regular season games.
In his last three games, Giroux is averaging 4.3 shots per game, including four in Sunday’s contest against New Jersey. If you believe one of Giroux’s shots will find its way through into the back of the net, you can get Giroux to score a goal at +200 odds.
