Tonight’s matchup is an interesting one as it comes as the second half of a back-to-back with both games taking place in the Big Apple. The New York Rangers were favored going into Thursday night’s game, but the result seriously put a dent in their postseason hopes. After Brendan Smith netted the first goal of the game midway through the first period, it felt like the Rangers were about to have a big night. However, with just 4:04 remaining, Travis Konecny’s shot deflected off the face of James van Riemsdyk to tie the game. Van Riemsdyk came back to deflect a shot with his stick midway through the final frame before Jakub Voracek wripped a gorgeous wrist shot to put the Orange & Black up 3-1. Artemi Panarin found the back of the net from just inside the blueline with two minutes remaining, but Philadelphia hung on for a 3-2 regulation win.

Will the Rangers get revenge, or will Philadelphia get their first two-game winning streak since March 29?

Bets We Like With a Rangers Win

Money Puck gives the Rangers a 59.2% chance of winning this game, which represents a 0.7% dip from ahead of Thursday’s game. Meanwhile, New York’s implied win probability based on the moneyline is nearly identical at 59%.

Rangers Win and Under 6.5 Goals (+215, DraftKings Sportsbook)

The Rangers’ playoff chances took a big hit by virtue of a 3-2 regulation loss to the Flyers at home on Thursday night. New York needs every point they can earn, as their 23-18-6 record puts them eight points behind the Boston Bruins for fourth place in the stacked East Division. The biggest issue facing the Blueshirts is the fact that Boston has two games in hand and the Rangers only have nine games remaining to close that gap. It’s unlikely, but not impossible. They’ll need a strong performance against Philadelphia tonight.

The real question facing New York as it pertains to this game is which Rangers squad we’ll see on Thursday night. Will it be the same squad that blew out the Flyers 9-0 and 8-3 or the team that’s dropped consecutive low-scoring results of 2-1 and 3-2 to the Orange & Black? In it’s worth noting that in the total goals have gone under the threshold in five of New York’s last six night games.

An interesting development in recent weeks for the Flyers has been the stabilization of their defensive system. It’s led to the under 6.5 goals market hitting in eight of their last 11 games. Perhaps it’s the familiarity they’ve developed with their East Division opponents or the internal pride of a number of their players in seeing out the end of a disappointing season. Either way, the team that bucked the trend in two of those three outliers, the Washington Capitals, aren’t Philadelphia’s opponent tonight.

While it’s possible that a New York Rangers squad with revenge on their mind could come out looking to bury Philadelphia early on, the leaky game that dogged Philadelphia in their own end a few weeks ago has been patched up a bit. Under 6.5 goals with a Rangers moneyline bet allows solid value with a relatively high cap on goalscoring.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Any Player to Score 2+ Goals (+125, FOX Bet)

If you’re looking for a player prop bet independent of outcome and regardless of team, taking any player to score two or more goals at +125 odds is worth a look. In fact, it’s happened a number of times in seven previous meetings between the Rangers and Flyers this season:

  • 2/24/21: Chris Kreider (3 goals)
  • 3/17/21: Mika Zibanejad (3 goals), Pavel Buchnevich (2 goals)
  • 3/25/21: Mika Zibanejad (3 goals), Pavel Buchnevich (2 goals)
  • 4/22/21: James van Riemsdyk (2 goals)

It’s worth noting that in two of those four instances, the multi-goal scorer(s) came in contests played at Madison Square Garden. Given that we expect a multiple goal effort from each team, +125 odds on any player from either team to score two or more goals is a wager worth considering.

Teams to Combine for Over 1.5 Third Period Goals (-250, BetMGM)

File this one under interesting day-dependent trends, but the Rangers have seen the Over 1.5 Third Period Goals market hit in 24 of their last 26 games on Fridays at Madison Square Garden. Beyond that, the same market hit in Thursday night’s meeting between the teams with the Flyers scoring two goals in the final frame to New York’s lone Artemi Panarin goal. It’s also hit in each of New York’s last four games and five of their last six games overall. As for meetings between these teams, the Rangers and Flyers have combined for at least two third period goals in four of their seven meetings on the season.

If you’re looking for a scoring prop regardless of team, this one is as good as it gets.

Flyers vs. Rangers Prediction

Pick: The Flyers got the upper hand and skated away with a regulation win on Thursday night. However, Philadelphia hasn’t won consecutive games since March 29th. With the Rangers’ limited chances of making the postseason hanging in the balance, expect a big night from the Blueshirts. Take the Rangers to Win and Under 6.5 Goals.
