I’ll be honest with you; I was purposefully kicking the can down the road because this story is a total mess and I didn’t even know where to begin with it. It turned Philadelphia sports Twitter into a Sunday night inferno, like somebody ran a dump truck into a nitroglycerin plant.

What happened is that Tyrone Johnson from 97.5 the Fanatic went on the Twitter warpath Sunday night, voicing his displeasure with a security guard at Lincoln Financial Field named “Sierra.”

In a since-deleted tweet, he referred to this “Sierra” as the stupidest human he’s ever met:

Now, Tyrone doesn’t seem like the type of guy to come out and just rip a security worker for no reason. And I’ll go on the record to say that relations between Crossing Broad and The Mike Missanelli Show have cooled off in recent weeks. Consider it a pseudo-armistice of sorts. We didn’t meet up in Switzerland and sign the papers, per se, but both sides have backed off for the time being, after the recent Odubel Herrera shit-slinging. But if Mike throws his headphones again, then consider the cease-fire to be over……. outright!

In this case, you have to think about the net positive of ripping a random part-time employee on Twitter. You have to be all-in and you can’t walk it back. Tyrone initially said he was going to talk about the incident on the radio today, and elaborate on what happened, but decided to nix that at his wife’s behest. That’s probably the wise move. From what I’ve been able to gather, the issue was more about wife vs. Sierra while Tyrone was unhappy with the way the latter treated the former. Tyrone was more of a bystander and wasn’t trying to “pull rank” or do the “do you know who I am?” routine. That’s what I was told by super-secret sources.

The disagreement had to do with bringing a bag into Lincoln Financial Field for the Eagles open practice. It’s BAG WARS. I’m told there is video of the incident but it will probably not be going public. There is maybe a 0.001% chance it sees the light of day. As such, we do not know what specific bag rule was being disputed, though Lincoln Financial Field sets guidelines that read like this, in part:

Fans are encouraged to limit the number of items they bring with them to the stadium. They will be permitted to carry one (1) of the following style and size bags into the stadium:

-Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12″ x 6″ x 12”

-One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar)

-Small clutch bags, approximately the size of a hand but not larger than 4.5″ x 6.5″, with or without a handle/strap. This small clutch bag may be carried into the stadium along with one of the clear bag options.

-An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection

Prohibited bags include but are not limited to: purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, luggage, seat cushions, computer bags, camera bags, binocular cases, or any bag larger than the permissible size.

Anyway, Tyrone did get into the stadium and proceeded to tweet some live updates from practice. After he dropped the tweet calling Sierra a dumb dumb, he got hammered on Twitter, fired back at some folks, and his wife ended up making her account private after conceding defeat:

Keep in mind, we have not heard from Sierra for her side of the story. We are “efforting” that, as they say in the news business. We reached out to the Eagles for comment, and if we get something back, we’ll update the post. Right now, the only thing floating around on social media comes from somebody who says he also works as a part-time Linc security guard and knows Sierra:

I’m still digging around for info here, but it seems like the story is pretty much dead at this point. Unless somebody leaks that video, that’ll wrap it up.

So what have we learned here? What’s the takeaway?

Some thoughts:

  1. If you’re gonna go public with something like this, you have to be prepared to see it through.
  2. Ty did make it into the Linc, so whatever the problem was, it didn’t keep him and his wife out of open practice.
  3. Twitter can escalate any situation into a raging dumpster fire in no time.
  4. Ultimately, it’s probably better to just file a complaint privately. Social media should be a last resort if you’re still unhappy with a situation and have nowhere else to go.

As a resolution here, I suggest a beer summit between Tyrone, his wife, and Sierra (no IPA, though). I’ll be the moderator. We’ll get everybody together in the 97.5 the Fanatic studios and hash it out. Then we’ll take your phone calls at 610-632-0975.

Edit – An earlier version of this story suggested that ales and porters were two different things. Technically a porter is a type of ale. I am embarrassed and have corrected this mistake.

Edit 2 – Here’s another tweet from RNB215 with a comment from Sierra, though it doesn’t explain exactly what the specific problem was. Just asserts that Tyrone and his wife were trying to skirt the rules:
