Chicago Bear Jason Peters Should Have Retired Two Years Ago
Some things in life are certain. Death. Taxes. Traffic on the Schuylkill Expressway. And Jason Peters finding his way to a NFL roster again and again and again.
Luckily for us, the 39 year old is going to Chicago and not returning to the Birds, with ESPN quoting head coach Matt Nagy:
Bears coach Matt Nagy said Peters signed with Chicago to compete for the starting left tackle job. The Bears’ original choice to play left tackle, rookie second-round pick Teven Jenkins, has been sidelined since the beginning of training camp with a back injury.
“It’s about familiarity with a guy that’s played in this league for a long time and has been very good,” Nagy said Saturday. “We understand that he’s older. There is a history with [Bears offensive line coach] Juan [Castillo]. Juan worked with him several years ago in Philadelphia. I was also there in Philadelphia.
Please. Jason Peters is cooked. He’s done. I hate the fact that I’m typing this, because Peters is an Eagle legend and Hall of Fame shoe-in, but you have to know when to hang it up, and nobody seems willing to tell him. He’s like that band that releases four great albums, and the 5th one stinks, but they want to keep recording anyway. And eventually you forget the four great albums because recency bias results in you only remembering the crappy new albums, and not the classic stuff. Jason Peters is basically Green Day.
As a reminder, Peters signed a one-year deal with the Birds to play guard last season. Then Andre Dillard got hurt, Peters asked for more money to go over to left tackle, and wound up starting eight games before a toe injury knocked him out for the rest of the year. He has missed 20 games in the last four seasons, did not play in the Super Bowl, and even when he did start was having issues playing 100% of the snaps. Oftentimes, he’d need to come out to have an injury looked at, and then might find himself back in the game eventually. It was inconsistent and unpredictable and thank the Lord in Heaven that Jordan Mailata is here to take the reins at LT.
Jason Peters is a Hall of Famer and nine-time Pro Bowler, and it’s admirable that the guy wants to play as long as possible. You only get one NFL career, right? YOLO! But you also have to know when to walk away, and that was two years ago.
