Flyers-Panthers Preview

The Flyers have played a pretty strong brand of hockey over the first three games of this season-opening homestand. Take away the second period against Vancouver in the opener where they took four penalties and allowed a pair of power play goals, the Flyers have looked as good as they have since before the pandemic hit in March 2020.

Meanwhile, the Florida Panthers are off to a franchise-best 4-0-0 mark to start the season, and did it by beating some quality teams – Pittsburgh, the New York Islanders, Tampa Bay and Colorado. They wanted to send a message to the league right off the bat that they are going to be a team to be reckoned with all season long and deep into the playoffs. However, while the schedule-maker gave them some tough opponents to start the season, they only had to leave the state of Florida once in the first 17 days of the season – and that’s tonight to play the Flyers.

It’s a quick up-and-back for the Panthers who return home after this contest for two more games, and as such, it could pose as a bit of a let down, especially after beating such high caliber teams to start the season.

Throw into the mix that the Flyers will be without top pair defenseman Ryan Ellis, who has been nursing an undisclosed injury, and it’s easy to see why Florida may mentally take the foot off the pedal in this one.

This may seem like a strange bet, considering the Flyers are averaging the most goals per game so far this season in the NHL, but they are going up against a Florida team that allows the least goals-per-game in the league. As such, when considering this game, you have to weigh other factors.

While the Flyers power play has been sensational so far, the Panthers PK ranks in the top 10. Not to mention the Flyers won’t be able to create much of a puck possession edge, if any, against a Florida team that is really good at playing keep-away.

So… why do we think the Flyers are going to win? Quite simply, it’s the ebbs and flows odf hockey. Florida isn’t going to win every game on their schedule, and they certainly had those first four games earmarked. Pittsburgh was the opener, The Islanders reached the Conference Final two years in a row, the Lightning are two-time defending Cup champs and the Avalanche are one of the favorites to win the Cup this year. Traveling to Philadelphia to play a non-playoff team from last season is the perfect spot for a letdown. The Panthers have also scored at least four goals in each game so far, so that offense has to slow down too. We like the Flyers in a close, lower scoring game. However, if you think it’ll go over 6.5 goals, you can get the Flyers and the over at +300  also at BetMGM.

The Panthers have gotten scoring from all over their roster so far this season, and while Huberdeau has compiled three assists, he’s yet to score. The Panthers would like to get him going as well as their other stars to keep their winning streak rolling.

With the Flyers concentrating on guys like Alexsander Barkov, Carter Verhaege, Anthony Duclair and rookie sensation Anton Lundell, who have been the primary goal scorers for the Panthers, Huberdeau could find a little more time and space than usual to get scoring chances on Carter Hart.

We don’t love the idea of a fifth straight win here for the Panthers, but if they’re going to get it, We think it’s Huberdeau’s turn to lead the charge.

The Flyers have been consistent over the first three starts at coming out and playing the right way right off the jump. Coach Alain Vigneault talked about the importance of getting good starts and scoring the first goal after practice Friday. Having a good first period is certainly on the Flyers radar.

It has been for Florida too, but we just can’t get past the way this game was slotted into their schedule and how teams often struggle in games like this that are oddballs in a schedule. As such, we think the Flyers will have a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. In fact, Fan Duel is also offering Under 1.5 goals in the first period at +112, which we think is a good value bet as well.

Flyers vs. Panthers Prediction

No Ryan Ellis, no problem. The Flyers seem to have better depth this season to deal with injuries, and Nick Seeler, who is their seventh defenseman, earned the third start of the game the last time he played (against Seattle, Monday). He’ll rotate back into the defensive lineup in place of Ellis. Meanwhile we believe in a low-scoring affair as this portends to be a goaltending game as Carter Hart looks to continue his early-season success for the Flyers. At the time of this writing, Florida had yet to announce if Sergei Bobrovsky or Spencer Knight would be in net, but both are off to great starts. Definitely think low scoring. Definitely think close. Heck, this one could venture into overtime.

Pick: We believe the Flyers prevail, 3-2.
