The Eagles released free agent signing Eric Wilson on Wednesday afternoon.

Here’s what Nick Sirianni said when asked about it at his midweek presser:

“Again, we had some guys that with Davion (Taylor) developing and doing some good things, that we wanted to get him more playing time.

And then on special teams, obviously, when it comes to the backup linebackers, they’re such an important part in special teams. Not that Eric didn’t play well on special teams or didn’t do his job when he was practicing with special teams, but the others – Shaun (Bradley) has really flourished on special teams and Alex (Singleton) is their special teams captain.

Obviously we’re sad that it didn’t work out here with Eric, but he did come in. He filled a role for us for the time being. Like I told him last night, I’ll always being grateful for what he contributed to the organization, to the culture that we’re trying to build. He’s a relentless worker and he works so hard and he loves football. I love that about him.”

Fair enough. Taylor is a 3rd round draft pick who needs snaps. T.J. Edwards played pretty well on Sunday. Bradley and Singleton are really good special teamers. And Wilson kind of stunk, based on what we watched every week. He’ll probably be the next L.J. Fort, and go on to play better for a better team. That would be our luck.

FYI, if you’re looking ahead to next year and the year after, a couple of LB prospects to keep an eye on.

The draft guys really like Utah’s Devin Lloyd:

Georgia’s Nakobe Dean is an absolute stud:

And there’s always an Alabama guy, isn’t there? Check out Christian Harris:

Other guys to keep an eye on? Penn State has a baller in Brandon Smith. Iowa’s Jestin Jacobs is really good as a sophomore and so is this guy Payton Wilson, who plays for a ranked NC State team. Brian Asamoah out of Oklahoma is another.
