Daniel Jeremiah Describes Jeffrey Lurie's Involvement in Eagles' Decision Making as "Healthy"
Daniel Jeremiah is one of the guys who can be trusted for Eagles knowledge because he spent a few years scouting for the team. He’s familiar with Jeffrey Lurie and Howie Roseman and the decision making process at NovaCare.
That was a takeaway topic from Lurie’s media availability in Florida this week, the amount of say and influence he has in said process. Lurie pushed back on the notion that he’s overly involved, bluntly stating that he wasn’t the driving force behind the J.J. Arcega-Whiteside draft pick. Lurie maintained, as he has for years now, that his involvement comes more at the macro level, as he oversees the process and tries to be an extra set of eyes for the player-personnel department.
That’s something Jeremiah corroborated on a Wednesday appearance with Jon Marks, Ike Reese, and likely Chuck from Mount Airy, who I’m sure called the station after he got off work:
“I worked for three teams and I would say he (Lurie) paid more attention or was more involved in the process than [Ravens owner] Steve Bisciotti was or [Browns owner] Randy Lerner was when the time I was with the Browns, but it wasn’t – I thought it was healthy. It wasn’t like he was saying, ‘Oh we need to take this guy or I don’t like that guy.’ He would read all of the reports. So when you put your report in the system, you knew that not only was your general manager going to read it, but your owner was going to read it. So, he read all of the reports. And it wasn’t often, but every now and then, they might call you into the draft room on draft day or the meetings leading up to it and he might have a question. ‘Hey, I’m reading through your reports and you said this about him and his background. Tell me more about that.’ He wanted to know more of the information, but he didn’t try to drive the direction of where we were going with the picks during my two years there. So I thought it was actually pretty healthy.”
This syncs up with everything we’ve heard previously about Lurie’s involvement. He does not seem to be hovering over Howie Roseman, saying “you must draft this guy or else you’re fired.” It seems like an overarching “hey are we doing our due diligence and following our process” type of approach. He wants to be involved, and maybe things are slightly different behind the scenes, but it seems like he’s less of the micro-managing and insufferable overruling type and more of the “let’s cover all of the bases here” type of dude.
Good interview with Jeremiah here if you want to listen to it. They’re doing a recurring thing with him leading up to the draft:
