Phils news:

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, and Kingery is recovering from shoulder surgery, but man, does that contract look bad. It’s like the albatross ate all of the other albatrosses and got really fat and annoying.

Kingery signed a six-year deal for $24 million back in 2018, when Matt Klentak was still running the show. He’s owed $6 million this year, which is the same as what Brad Hand and Jeurys Familia are earning. The contract goes to $8.2 million next year and then there are club options with a $1 million buyout trigger.

Kingery was one of the myriad guys the Phillies tried to put in center field last year, to keep Odubel Herrera out of the picture. He couldn’t take the job, nor could Adam Haseley or Mickey Moniak or Roman Quinn. I asked a friend for his thoughts and he said this:

“I was fooled. I thought (Kingery) was going to be decent. But he changed his swing to try and hit for more power, and could never find it again, and now he’s completely lost, likely never to be found.”
