Georges Niang was on the First Time, Long Time podcast, calling in from some kind of underground bunker, and gave a warning shot to any fan who wants to talk shit:

This is why I don’t think it’s a problem if fans heckle or boo players. If you feel like you have to talk shit to someone on the wood, then players should be able to give it right back. How can this guy be shocked that Gorgeous Georges said something to the bench after hitting a three in his eyeball? What’s this fan doing, getting in the middle of it and then thinking that since he was ten toes on the wood that Niang wouldn’t say anything back to him? Dude, basketball is the only sport where there is no wall between you and the players. You’re in the lion’s den now pal. Everyone should get the opportunity to sit courtside once in their life. It’ll change your mind about how basketball is played and these absolute specimens who play it. Plus the shit talking between players is amazing.

I think as long as shit talking doesn’t get personal and you’re funny or creative, let it fly. I was at the Phillies game in left field last year against the Padres. This guy kept chirping Tommy Pham for getting stabbed at a strip club a couple years ago. Pham misplayed a ball, the guy said, “You really took a stab at that one Tommy” I laughed and everyone went on their way. Until the fan just kept making stab jokes for the next three innings. Bro, the greatest roast comics in the world couldn’t come up with three innings worth of stab jokes that kill. But this guy was drunk off of a couple laughs that he couldn’t wrap his brain around it that people didn’t actually pay to see him. Don’t be that guy.
