Mark Sanchez, who brought us the butt fumble, went on The Official Jets Podcast and admitted that during his rookie year he didn’t have a full grasp of conferences and the playoff layout:

Appreciate the honesty from Sanchez. We all have brain farts. No big deal. Donovan McNabb didn’t know how the overtime rules worked. Chris Webber tried to use a timeout he didn’t have. Jim Joyce felt remorse after he dicked over Armando Galarragga.

The Jets actually went 9-7 that year and ended up in the AFC Championship Game, losing 30-17 to the Colts. They took out the Bengals and Chargers en route. Sanchez threw 12 picks and 20 interceptions that season, but it was the team with Thomas Jones and Shonn Greene running the ball, with Pro Bowlers Shaun Ellis and Darrelle Revis on defense. Sanchez was a lot better in 2010 and 2011, but the Jets again lost the AFC Championship Game and haven’t made the playoffs since.
