Jonathan Gannon spoke to the media on Tuesday, actually beginning with the increasingly-rare opening statement. He didn’t say anything Earth-shattering, but noted that giving up 35 points “isn’t good enough” and that the defense failed on several opportunities to put the game away.

On the topic of Jordan Davis, he said:

Gannon:

“He did a good job when he was in there. I thought he played his technique well, and what we’re asking him to do, he did a good job of executing. The 22 snaps, those guys all played, the five D-tackles that were up, and they’ll continue to all play. I think Jordan will keep maximizing his opportunities.

He also said to this in response to a follow up question:

“I feel comfortable with Jordan playing in three and four man fronts. He’s a defensive tackle and can play all of those techniques within all of those schemes. Moving forward, he’ll be playing in everything we do.”

Well that’s nice. Let’s get the big boy on the field. You guys gave up assets to trade UP in the first round and go get him, so he’s gotta be a focal point here moving forward.

A couple of other notes from his presser:

  • they could have really helped themselves by getting off the field on 3rd down, i.e. “situational” football wasn’t up to snuff
  • they set up the game plan a certain way with Nick Sirianni and Howie Roseman, and try to stick to the plan “within reason,” though he notes that snaps are going to “fluctuate” throughout the year
  • need to “clean up” the run game, execution wasn’t good enough
  • he feels like they were in the right alignments most of the time to combat the run, just gotta execute better
  • he doesn’t think the sloppiness was the result of not doing enough live tackling in the preseason
  • they could have been “a little bit” gassed in the fourth quarter, but he felt like their conditioning was fine, seemed to suggest it was more about them wearing themselves out by not getting off the field when they could have
  • Gannon “liked” how they deployed Haason Reddick, whose name I can’t remember hearing a single time during the broadcast
  • he doesn’t think the defense took their foot off the gas or started to cruise because they thought the game was over – “it wasn’t our attitude, it came down to technique and schematic issues”
  • there were a handful of bad play calls that he wants back

That’s about it. The press conference wasn’t terribly exciting. He played it safe, took responsibility, and said what he needed to say. Now he’s gotta clean it up or else Justin Jefferson is gonna go for 250 and three touchdowns on Monday night.
