The takeaway there is that CJGJ played 100% of the snaps and Josiah Scott wasn’t out there at all. My eyes were messing with me, because one guy is #23 and the other is number #33 and they were wearing all black, so I kept swearing to myself that Scott played some slot snaps, which ended up not being true.
Make no mistake – having Gardner-Johnson out there at full strength is a massive boon for the Eagles. He was not limited at all in this game. Putting him in the slot kept Reed Blankenship at safety, which they can restructure if Avonte Maddox is good for to for the playoffs.
This is where CJGJ’s prior slot experience with New Orleans really helps, because the multiplicity of his skill set allowed the Eagles to fill the bigger hole. It would certainly be an upgrade to have Gardner-Johnson at safety, with Epps and Scott on the field, but the trio of Epps/CJGJ/Blankenship is arguably better than the trio of Epps/CJGJ/Scott. If Maddox comes back for the divisional round, you’ve got your entire first-choice nickel group back, after playing with only three of those five guys for a large chunk of the back-end of the schedule.
Positive development here. Extremely positive.
