Monday was the debut of WIP’s new morning show, hosted by Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie.

One of the things listeners were curious about was the status of Angelo Cataldi’s daily callers, and while a number of them did dial up on day one, the tone and vibe was noticeably different:

You’re probably thinking something along the lines of “who gives a shit?“, but these calls provide some hints as to how the new show will operate. It seems like they’re not going to cut off the likes of Eagles Shirley and Kenny from the Dirty 30 entirely, but it felt like they were just normal callers on Monday and not given any kind of preferential treatment or extra air time or anything like that.

There’s a tightrope to walk here if you’re DeCamara, because you want to welcome in people who listened to Angelo’s show while carving out your own identity and building your own brand at the same time. This would seem to signal a slight shift in approach, though we’ll see if Butch from Manayunk and other assorted dum dums resurface. If I hear Marisa from Tokyo singing in Japanese on the new show, I’M OUT.

As you’re all aware, I’m the world’s #1 advocate for a return to the “once per week, once on the weekends” rule, which would absolutely cripple Chuck from Mt. Airy and assorted dingbat regulars on both WIP and the Fanatic. We don’t need to hear the same jokers call the station three times a day. Enough already. I heard some dude on WIP and then an hour later he was talking to Gargano. It’s outrageous.
