Hurts was the betting favorite more than halfway through the season. The injury and loss of two games obviously made a big difference here, because Mahomes ran away with the award.

It’s hard to build an argument against KC quarterback. He went 14-3 this year, played all 17 games, and threw for 5,250 yards on a 67.1 completion percentage. Mahomes logged 41 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, threw for 8.1 yards on average, and added 358 rushing yards and four scores.

Hurts was 14-1 this season and benefited from a throwaway game against the Giants’ backups coming off injury in week 18. He finished with 3,701 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, and a 66.5 completion percentage. He ran for 760 yards and 13 scores on 165 total attempts.

So it is what it is. I don’t think anybody is really surprised, especially after how the regular season ended, but maybe it’s a bit of motivation for Hurts going into the Super Bowl.
