New York Mets closer Edwin Díaz tore the patellar tendon in his right knee during the celebration after Puerto Rico’s WBC victory against the Dominican Republic. He will need surgery and is expected to miss the season.

Look, it sucks ass. The guy pulled a Gramatica, which is ridiculous, and the most Mets thing ever, but there can be no victory lap after a player from a division rival tears up his knee. You wanna beat the Mutts at full strength, and you want a guy like Edwin Diaz playing baseball in 2023. Timmy Trumpet was good for the game. It created viral moments that got people interested. The NL East became a little more dull on March 16th. This entire season was gonna be fire, and without Diaz it pours a little bit of cold water on the whole thing.
He turns 29 later this month, so hopefully he’s back on the mound before he hits 30.
