Are You Eating The Most Expensive Burger In Philly?
DBG, formerly Drury Beer Garden, is reopening as a burger bar and putting a $700 Gold Standard burger on the menu via Maggie Mancini at PhillyVoice:
The gold standard burger retails for $700 and is made with Japanese ribeye wagyu beef, Irish cheddar cheese, Italian black truffle, caviar, lobster meat prepared in Louis XIII cognac, a brioche bun topped with gold leaf and fries drizzled with honey.
Is this burger what gentrifies Chinatown next?
This is a brilliant idea! Not because a bunch of people are going to buy this just to eat it next to the McGillins dumpsters, but because everyone is freaking out over it and DBG is cashing in off the free publicity. How many do you think they expect to sell? Three a month, maybe. What they don’t sell they’ll just use the ingredients for a special. Old hockey trick. You can do a black truffle or lobster pasta one night or find a dish that incorporates wagyu and caviar. Restaurants do this all the time when product is about to expire. You think you’re getting the branzino at a great price? Turns out that thing is a couple days from going bad and the chef has to sell it ASAP.
Plus, you’ll get your occasional YouTube foodie or TikTok influencer who can say they ate the $700 burger in Philly and it’s more free advertising. Will Kinker let me expense a $700 burger for content? He’s a chump if he doesn’t…just saying.
Honestly, I didn’t even know this place was reopening under another name. I thought it was still called Opa. I did have one of the best burgers I’ve ever had back in 2016 on Mummers Day. Was it because because I was drunk and starving? We’ll never know.
They are giving away 50 free burgers during happy hour on Friday from 4 to 7pm if you want to check it out.
My top 5 burgers in the city list:
- Village Whiskey
- Royal Tavern before it closed
- Fountain Porter
- Bar Hygge
- McDonalds. Fuck off. A double cheeseburger and Coke still fucking rakes!
Honorable mention because I was too much of a pussy to put it in my top 5. The vegan Ziggy Burger at HipCityVeg is really good. Don’t knock it til you try it.
