I feel like there have only been whispers about Chubby’s supplanting Dalessandro’s over the last couple of years, but I’m ready to shout it from the mountaintops. Chubby’s is head and shoulders above Dalessandro’s and it might not be close, all things considered. And listen, I HATE cheesesteak discourse in Philly. I don’t care if it’s Pat’s or Geno’s or it’s your local pizza shop down the street. Cheesesteak discourse is corny and has just turned into people trying to one up each other. But at the end of the day it’s only right to call people out who just seem to be skating by on reputation. You can’t tell the story of cheesesteaks without mentioning Dalessandro’s. Just like you can’t tell the history of basketball shoes without mentioning Converse. But the greats get picked off when standards lack and if you’ve been to Dalessandro’s in the last couple of years you know the quality has gone to shit. This is the big leagues. If you’re not pulling your weight you’ll be optioned to the cheesesteak minor leagues.

It used to be a place you had pride in when you told some out of towners to go there. They have the awards to show for it. But now when I get off the golf course at Walnut Lane it’s Chubby’s 10 out of 10 times, every time. Not only do I like their cheesesteaks better, but the atmosphere kicks Dalessandro’s ass. You actually get to go inside and eat at a diner-style table or counter or drink a beer rather than bake in the hot sun while someone shouts at you over a bullhorn.

Don’t just take my word for it. I’m an amateur of sandwiches. Listen to the professionals. Known sandwich experts, The Samboners, didn’t even have the legendary spot crack their Top 10:

In 2019 this would’ve been disrespect. Now it’s true. Don’t argue with me. Argue with Charles Barkley, who knows what he’s talking about. He’s a Chubby’s regular:
