Let’s get it back to wrestling.

Mick Foley went on Twitter Wednesday to inform everyone that the legendary Terry Funk had passed:

Writes Mick:

Terry Funk is gone. I just talked to Terry’s daughter, Brandee, who gave me the awful news. He was my mentor, my idol, one of the closest friends. He was the greatest wrestler I ever saw.

If you get the chance, look up a Terry Funk match or a Terry Funk promo, and give thanks that this incredible man gave so much, for so long, to so many. There will never be another like him. May God bless Terry, his friends, family and all who loved him. RIP my dear friend – it was an honor to know you. #RIPTerryFunk”

Terry Funk is a WWE Hall of Famer and wrestling ICON. He had a career spanning something like 50 years, so if you were an O.G. you probably remember first seeing him in WWF in the mid 1980s after many years in Japan. He had a brief stint with WCW in the early 90s, but locally, Philly wrestling fans will remember the awesome matches he had in ECW, which led into WWF’s Attitude era.

Funk was best known for performing in these hardcore bouts. Just total insanity at the time. Nothing was off limits. I remember the ECW matchup against Foley (Cactus Jack) where he brought out a branding iron. There was a garbage dumpster match in WWF against the New Age Outlaws, the legendary barbed wire match with Sabu, and an ECW title win at Barely Legal 1997, when he was already in his 50s. That’s the craziest thing about the ECW years, that Funk had already wrestled for decades prior and was doing what he did when most other guys had already retired or were on the cusp. His longevity was incredible. He was competing in these grueling and violent matches against opponents who were 25 years younger, smashing him with chairs and trash cans and anything else they could get their hands on.

This is a weird/hard story to write, because you had to watch Funk to understand how great his matches and performances were. There are no words to describe Terry Funk, like if you know, you know, and if you don’t know, you have to watch the YouTube clip below.

Coincidentally, we’ve got Brian Heffron, The Blue Meanie, coming on Crossing Broadcast this afternoon, so we’ll ask him to share a few Terry Funk stories from back in the day.

RIP.
