WWE news? WWE news. A HUGE WrestleMania update on Friday Night Smackdown. In a surprise twist, it was revealed that Roman Reigns and The Rock will be the main event at WrestleMania 40 in Philly:

If you’re confused, I’ll give you a quick synopsis. Cody Rhodes won the Royal Rumble last week, which gets him a #1 contender shot for the heavyweight title currently carried by Roman Reigns. The WWE Universe loves Cody Rhodes. He’s the son of a wrestling legend and a great underdog story from when he started in the industry to where he is now. People were finally excited that he’d get his shot to main event in the grandaddy of them all against a champ who is a little stale. I think Roman Reigns has the longest title defense in the history of the WWE or something and fans are kind of lukewarm on him because he’s not particularly great on the mic or exciting and leans on Paul Heyman. Well, Friday night, Cody Rhodes announces that he won’t be fighting Reigns at WrestleMania and instead it’ll be The Rock in a surprise twist. Shocking. Like if Tom Brady actually took over for Brock Purdy this year.

Wrestling purists HATE this move. A 51 year old movie star facing off against Roman Reigns goes against everything they love about wrestling and Cody Rhodes is passed over again. They saw this exact scenario play out in 2012 when The Rock faced off against John Cena for the title at WrestleMania 28. The lasting memory of this matchup? This “Once in a Lifetime” meme you see on Twitter all the time:

Me with no skin in the game? I love it! It’s a huge draw for the biggest wrestling event of the year. I’m a product of the Attitude era so anytime you can get one of those guys in the mix I’m all for it. Get Mankind’s ass in here so we thrown him off a cell this year. I want the glass to shatter and Stone Cold to come out and open up a can of whoop ass or the entire stadium to go dark as The Undertaker saunters out. There’s a reason it was the greatest era in wrestling entertainment. I know people don’t like the matchup, but screw the people who watch every week. WrestleMania is for everyone and the more PPV buys and subs the better. Who sells to the average person? Cody Rhodes or The Rock? It’s a no brainer. What Super Bowl would’ve been better? Patrick Mahomes vs. the 49ers or the Ravens vs. the Lions? Butts in seats. Butts in seats.
