Kyle Schwarber had a casual six-RBI night in Canada with three home runs to propel the Phillies to a 10-9 comeback win. As Toronto now begrudgingly converts every Tim Horton’s into a Wawa, here’s a good stat from Matt Mullin:

Schwarber had been dinger-less for some time, though the Hoagiefest angle I was unaware of. Before Tuesday night, his last homer was 8/14, the grand slam from the 9-5 win against the Marlins that snapped a four-game losing streak. But since that game? He and the top of the order have not exactly been lighting the world on fire.

Here are Schwarber’s Hoagiefest splits, as of publication:

  • before Hoagiefest (March 29th through June 16th) – .248/.367/.431, 65 hits, six doubles, 14 home runs, 43 RBI
  • during Hoagiefest (June 17th through August 11th) – .273/.425/.612, 38 hits, eight doubles, 13 home runs, 31 RBI
  • after Hoagiefest (August 12th to current) – .190/.269/.381, 16 hits, four doubles, four home runs, 14 RBI

This more or less confirms what we already knew about Schwarber. He mashes in the summer. Nobody is making up the “June Schwarber” thing, though what was interesting this year is that June Schwarber was more like “Late May Schwarber.” He got into his summer groove a little earlier than normal with four multi-hit performances over the final six May games, and finished the month with a .297 average and .871 OPS. He was up and down in July and most of the Hoagiefest damage was done in early August, when he went on that tear during the Seattle/LA/Arizona road trip.

Regardless, he needed a performance like this one in Toronto. He didn’t have an RBI in the seven games prior and only had two hits total in the same span, so if three homers in Canada gets him going, that’s very nice.
