The Phillies got the job done with a 6 to 2 home win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night. They win the National League East for the first time since 2011 and do it for the 12th time in franchise history:

It was a somewhat muted celebration on the field. They put the shirts and hats on, took a couple of photos, and gathered on the mound. They looked like a team that knows there’s plenty of work left to be done, first battling LA for the top seed in the National League while trying to secure a first round bye.

They’re 93-64 and neck-and-neck with the Dodgers with five games left to play. But it was never about just winning the division, of course. This was a team that’s won a pennant more recently than the N.L. East, so World Series is and always was the goal.

But in the locker room, it was what you would expect:

Red October. There’s nothing like it. Let’s get that bye and get the #1 seed and let’s get John Middleton’s fucking trophy back. What an owner. I’d run through a brick wall for John Middleton.
