We have made it to Week 1 of the Philadelphia Eagles’ 2024 season. Birds vs. Packers in Brazil on Friday night.

But first, an update to the biggest story of Labor Day weekend.

Those Kamala Harris advertisements seen at Philly bus stops? The Eagles and the city say they’re counterfeit, and Joe from South Philly felt it was his duty to cover them up:

“My concern here is not that someone is expressing an opinion, which everyone is entitled to do, but this person is lying to everyone who comes and uses this stop. That’s what I’m concerned about. The fact that they’re spreading lies, that the Philadelphia Eagles endorsed Kamala Harris as a candidate for President of the United States. We all know Philadelphia is the battleground for Pennsylvania, and these type of lies are the thing that prevent honesty in the election process… it’s a holiday, nobody’s working, SEPTA is on holiday schedule, so no one has come to remove this sign.”

This is a noble pursuit if we’re taking South Philly Joe at his word. He is basically performing some spin off of a citizen’s arrest, where he sees a problem in the community and takes action to fix it. In this case, the problem is that the Eagles, city, and ad company all came out and deemed these advertisements to be fugazi, and yet they remained plastered on several Philadelphia bus stops, so with nobody acting to remove them, Joe went and did it himself.

The other opinion is that Joe has no business doing this, since he has nothing to do with the Eagles, SEPTA, etc. Let the people in charge of those things handle the situation. If Joe goes and covers up some ad, what’s to stop other people from doing it? Now we’ve got a bunch of renegades running around the city. Outrageous! Plus, there are all sorts of election laws that the average person knows nothing about, so you fuck around and find yourself in front of a judge, or in jail for election interference.

In case people have not seen these, NBC 10 got statements from the city and from the ad agency:

Intersection Media, the New York-based company which owns the bus shelters where the ads were spotted, also released a statement.

“We are aware that several of our bus shelters located in Philadelphia have been vandalized and that the paid advertising copy in each of those shelters has been replaced with unauthorized copy,” a spokesperson wrote. “While our bus shelters have locks that typically prevent the installation of unauthorized copy by non-Intersection staff, occasionally people find a way to unlock the ad box and insert unauthorized copy. The unauthorized copy in this case implies an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris by the Philadelphia Eagles. We note that the Eagles and Intersection had nothing to do with the creation or posting of this unauthorized copy and Intersection staff will be removing the ads as soon as possible.”

A city spokesperson also released a statement in response to the ads, calling them “illegally placed.”

“These were not digital ads placed by the Harris campaign, the Philadelphia EAGLES, SEPTA, The City of Philadelphia or the media agency, Intersection, that handles the transit ad space,” the spokesperson wrote. “This was not a digital breach; whomever is responsible for the illegally placed posters, broke into the securely covered shelter ad space and somehow put the posters in the space. Intersection has advised the City’s Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems (OTIS) that they plan to conduct a full inventory tomorrow (Tuesday) of all bus shelters, and remove any illegally posters. The City has a process to review all bus shelter ads but this, again, was not a digital ad.”

That’s the official word for now. The conspiracy theory accounts on social media continue to believe the Eagles are responsible and now LYING to us about it.

disclaimer: this is not a political post. Crossing Broad does not support any political candidate or party and if you think the Birds would be dumb enough to endorse a Presidential candidate, I have beachfront property in Clifton Heights to sell you
