The Phillies got absolutely smoked on Friday night, but we had a nice viral moment when a fan gave a home run ball to a little kid Mets fan instead of throwing it back onto the field:

Those Philly fans! They’re the worst!

Not really. Another example of why national stereotypes of Philadelphia sports fans are inaccurate. When you have the choice of making a little kid’s day or doing something else, make the kid’s day. In this case, the “something else” was corny anyway, throwing back a home run ball while your team is down 6-0 at home and getting shellacked. Plus, this isn’t even our thing. Throwing back home run balls has been absorbed by other fanbases, but it’s really a Chicago Cubs thing and started at Wrigley.

When you think of alternative scenarios here, Zack Hample would have jumped in front of the kid, stolen the ball from him, and kept it for himself. Or, if this was California, the fans would have fought each other for the ball and hit each other in the head with folding chairs (or shanked each other at a burger joint). We keep it civil at Citizens Bank Park, unless you’re Mattress Mack. You’re done pal!
