Phillies ace Zack Wheeler finished 2nd in the 2024 National League Cy Young race, losing to division rival Chris Sale:

Wheeler’s 2024 season was the best of his 5-year Phillies career so far. He logged a 16-7 record in 32 starts, tallying 200 innings, 224 strikeouts, a 0.955 WHIP, 6.3 Hits per 9, and 10.4 K/9. He finished 3rd in all of baseball in ERA, 4th in the league in innings pitched, and 1st in the National League in WHIP.

This is now the 2nd time that Wheeler has fallen just short of the Cy Young in red pinstripes, his first being in his 2021 season where he tallied a 7.5 WAR across 32 starts, good for 1st in the Majors, and finished 2nd for the award.

You tip your hat to Chris Sale, although I don’t love that he wasn’t out there for his team for the biggest two starts of their season. But he was nasty when he was on the field. He logged a 2.38 ERA and an 18-3 record in 29 starts with 225 strikeouts in 177.2 innings and took home the National League Triple Crown.

Zack Wheeler received four 1st place votes, 25 2nd place votes, and 1 4th (??) place vote from David Brandt of AP. Cristopher Sanchez received two 5th-place votes, and Aaron Nola received one 5th-place vote.

Rip up those Zack Wheeler 9/1 Cy Young tickets. It’s a sad day. We were so close.
