There was a play in garbage time on Sunday night where the refs picked up a flag after it looked like Milton Williams was being held on a huge Lamar Jackson run:

Some are arguing that William’s momentum wasn’t impeded, which is why the refs picked up the flag. Ehhhh. Dunno about that. He does a great job of fighting through, but there’s definitely an awkward step in there with the lineman pulling down on the jersey. It’s slight, but you can see it when you watch the replay back.

For context, this was 3rd and 3 and Jackson went 39 yards into the red zone. They scored a touchdown on the next play, cut the lead to five, and put themselves in position for an onside kick, which, if recovered, would have allowed a Hail Mary attempt. The odds of the Eagles losing in that fashion were considerably low, but it shouldn’t have come down to that in the first place. If the refs just called the holding on Williams, you’re looking at 3rd and 13 from the Ravens’ 40-yard line, and the game is probably over. Instead, they picked up the flag for whatever reason, almost as if they were on cruise control and swallowing whistles with the Eagles’ win thought to be in the bag.

The moral of the story is you gotta do your job until the end. Make the call, you coward zebras. And the Eagles gotta finish, too. They missed some tackles on that play and I think that’s Isaiah Rodgers flying through the air and not even touching Jackson, a tribute to Asante Samuel, perhaps. (EDIT – I know Ravens fans will find this post and complain about the non-false start on the tush push, but you got away with defensive holding in the end zone on the same drive, so it’s a wash)

Sidenote: Why doesn’t Lamar run more? He can still do so much damage with his legs, but it feels like most of his runs are scrambles on broken passing plays. Design some stuff for him, let your line get away with holding, and that offense is unstoppable.
