RADIO WARS: Mike Missanelli Believes WIP Afternoon Show is Stealing Ideas
Mikey Miss tweeted this out on Wednesday, suggesting that the WIP afternoon show lifted one of his show topics for a poll:
Happy to see the WIP afternoon show is listening to the Mike Missanelli Show for content. They have good taste in shows. https://t.co/2cSU46yudG

Hmm. We’re gonna need a little bit more information before we can cast judgment. We’re gonna need more detail.
Thankfully for us, Mike spoke more about it Thursday:
Mikey Miss: “So today our topic is the #1 seed, which you may see in a Twitter poll from the other station. We’re glad to provide content. (Wednesday), the theme of our show was whether this style of offense could actually (win in the postseason), and we talked about it all day, it was the major focus. Bill sends this to me and I put a tweet out there, and it causes some consternation from people. But here’s the deal, alright? This is the way it sometimes works. We talked about this topic, we introduce it at 10 o’ clock, it’s the main theme of our show. Here’s my theory – a producer at that other station who does their afternoon show, heard us and said ‘wow that’s an interesting topic,’ and put it up in a poll. Now, if you believe that’s a coincidence, that’s fine. But these people trying to defend it, this is what it tells me, that producer of that other station, who heard us do that, has good taste in listening to midday shows. I give the guy credit. He’d rather listen to our show than their show! It’s simple as that. And he’s got good taste. He should! Why would you listen to that midday show! Listen to this one, you get your ideas from this show, and you put a poll up. Just fess up to it.”
Missanelli is being a little cheeky. A little facetious. But an accusation does remain. Was Jack Fritz lifting material from the Fanatic? Did he steal from them the same way he stole the Trea Turner standing ovation idea from Philly Captain? Heyo! (Just kidding. No one cares who came up with that first)
Here’s the deal – it’s a very incestuous content ecosystem, especially in Philadelphia sports talk radio, where they bludgeon you to death with the Eagles. Chances are, the Fanatic and WIP will be talking about the same football topics, which will be discussed by Inside the Birds, which will also be discussed by Bleeding Green and Crossing Broad and everyone with a microphone and YouTube account within a 100-mile radius of the Delaware Valley. These Eagles topics are not exactly proprietary or unique. Of course people are going to talk about the way that the Birds are winning, with this run-heavy, game manager-type of style. When you’re doing 20 hours of radio Monday to Friday, there will be topical saturation, especially when the entire editorial strategy is to “play the hits,” and by “play the hits” I mean talk about the same banal shit over and over again. Why play Subdivisions when you can play Tom Sawyer for the 1,700th time? A Rush reference for you on a Friday morning.
Bottom line, we’re all watching the same games and making the same observations, so it’s not like this is some super proprietary thing that someone discovered. It would be one thing if Baldy went on the radio and said, “you know what, I’ve noticed that when they call Blue 42 with a pulling guard through the B gap, they often run for 5+ yards,” and then the other station came up with a poll asking if the Eagles should run more Blue 42 with a pulling guard through the B gap. That’s super specific. But asking about offensive style? Don’t know. Seems like a coincidence, but only WIP knows. Pass out the truth serum at the next show prep meeting and we’ll get some answers.
