“Ueck” had been broadcasting for the Brewers since 1971, so more than 50 seasons in that role. Incredible. He’s basically their Harry Kalas or Merrill Reese, a legendary figure out in Wisconsin. He picked up the nickname “Mr. Baseball” from Johnny Carson, who frequently had him on his late night show.
Uecker was also a player himself, a backup catcher who spent two of his Major League seasons with the Phillies. He won the 1964 World Series with the Cardinals and when he retired he dabbled in comedy and acting in addition to radio play-by-play.
His role as broadcaster Harry Doyle in 1989’s Major League was hilarious, one of the best sports movies ever. He dropped a bunch of lines that made their way into pop culture. “Juuuuust a bit outside. He tried the corner and missed.” RIP Ueck.
