We mentioned the NBC cuts this morning, which are now hitting the regional networks after some national writers were let go on Monday.

Among those laid off at NBC Sports Philadelphia is Phillies broadcast member Gregg Murphy, who worked as a field reporter since 2012.

He spoke with Rob Tornoe at The Philadelphia Inquirer:

Murphy, who celebrated his 20th anniversary with Comcast last week, is currently off-the-air after experiencing coronavirus symptoms as he awaits test results. He will return to the broadcast once he’s able to clear NBC’s protocols and finish out the Phillies truncated 2020 season for the network.

“First and foremost, I’m disappointed in the news, but it’s a tough time for everyone and I understand why this is happening,” Murphy told the Inquirer. “I am unbelievably grateful for the time I’ve had at NBC over the last 20 years – nine and a half with the Phillies broadcast team. I very much look forward to coming back and fishing the season as soon as I’m cleared to get back to the ballpark.”

Terrible. You have COVID symptoms, you’re off the broadcast, and then they inform you that you’re being laid off? That’s ridiculous.

There were more cuts. You’ll see those people start to make their social media announcements soon. Some NBCSP writers were let go, and we’re being told that Murph is not the only on-air personality to get swept up in the latest round of layoffs.

Bummer all around. The TV and digital business really sucks right now.
