Phillies

Even by Angel Hernandez Standards, this was a Hideous Call

Absolutely pitiful:

After the game, Harper said “you’re grinding out an at-bat, facing a guy I’ve never faced before and I get to a 3-2 count, take a slider down and in, obviously didn’t go and wasn’t thinking about it in that situation. I was taking my stuff off and just heard the crowd’s reaction and I was like, ‘there’s no way.’ Angel in the middle of something again. It’s just, every year, same story, the same thing. I’m probably going to get a letter from (MLB) and get fined for being right again. It’s the same thing over and over and over again and it’s just not right.”

It was 1-1 in the bottom of the third when this sequence happened. Good thing the Phillies had already clinched, and this wasn’t some late-inning, high-leverage type of situation with the postseason still in question.

But it doesn’t make Hernandez any less of a doofus. And what is there to say about him in 2023? Everybody knows he’s the worst umpire in the game. He’s been the worst ump for years now, but I guess the umpires have the most powerful union on the planet. Getting rid of the guy is harder than bringing your emotional support alligator into the ballpark.
