WHAT: Youth Sports Rally at FDR Park

Unity in the Community is hosting a rally in support of the new fields and courts coming to FDR Park. Mayor Cherelle Parker will join the event, where there will be a DJ, food trucks, kid-friendly activities, Commandos Drill Team, and a short speaking program. The event is free, but registration is requested: click here to register.

The rally is on Saturday. This is old news, but I don’t think we ever shared this on the site. It’s pretty cool.

They are redoing FDR Park entirely and the new design will have what looks like a dozen fields, upgraded tennis courts, and six different baseball diamonds:

Compare it to the old park, which looks like ass:

They’re moving a bunch of the stuff from the Broad Street side to the Penrose side. There’s just more room for tennis/baseball/softball/soccer, all of that.

If you’ve been to South Philly even once in the last 15 years, you know outdoor recreation space is at a premium. Good fields are hard to come by. We used to play at the turf Supersite at 10th and Bigler, and there are those old baseball fields a couple of blocks on either side, but otherwise you get a handful of cramped rec centers that aren’t exactly up to date.

This is the third phase of the park’s redesign, which runs from 2023 to 2026. It includes the fieldhouse, courts, fields, playground, and picnic plaza.
